Chapter One. On South Fourth Street, in Reading, a manufacturing town in a valley in southeastern Pennsylvania, there is a white shingle house with a vacant barber shop on the ground floor. It is quite an ordinary house, like a thousand others in Reading, but it is watched from time to time by the police of the city and its floor plan is noted in the dossiers of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. One Sunday morning in October, 1965, a New Yorker named Daniel Burros, who was then twenty-eight years old, in excellent health, in love, and beginning to achieve status in the world in which he moved, which was the whole world to him, rushed into the house to the small bedroom behind the barber shop where he had been living for about a week, looked again at a headline on the front page of a copy of The New York Times that he was carrying, threw the newspaper on the floor, ran upstairs to his host's bedroom, tried to smash open a gun cabinet with karate kicks, saw a revolver lying on a bureau, seized it, and shot himself in the chest.
