Preface. I should like to warn the reader that this book is based upon a very brief visit to Russia in the summer of 1932. Whatever value the book may have will depend upon the background of judgment, not upon the area of observation. To the reader who wishes a more detailed presentation of the evidence I should warmly recommend Elisha Friedman's Russia in Transition. Most of the material here printed has appeared in a series of articles published by the Saturday Evening Post, to whose courteous editors acknowledgment is hereby made. Chapter IV, on "The Religious Revolution in Russia," has not been published before. The views expressed in this book will be unavoidably unpopular with most critics, whose naturalliberalism and sympathetic interest in new experiments will be offended by this apparent betrayal of the liberal cause.
