Preface. This book has had a mysterious fate. It was conceived in the summer of 1977, when I formally studied the Gothic language at the university, it was further developed in the 1980s as new material was gathered on my researches in Europe and finally outlined in the early 1990s. By the dawn of the new millennium, I felt I could bequeath this valuable and precious project to a trusted student and colleague to complete. This idea proved to be misguided on my part, as the student proved untrustworthy and unable to fulfill the vision of the book. The project was soon back on my schedule of works to complete. ...
