Foreword. Since 52 b.c. the inhabitants of France and western Europe have forgotten who they once were. They have even forgotten the site of their defeat at the hands of the rationalism of Julius Caesar, conqueror and secondhand proconsul, a man deeply convinced that he was a king before whom universal posterity would one day bow. Alesia has been forgotten, yet this was the place from which everything took a decisive turn. Through the tangents and chance events of conquest, a Mediterranean mentality, one built on a belief in universalism and the logic of an exclusive third party, slowly but surely replaced the barbarous state of mind that was nourished on sensibility, that rationalized dialectically, and that trusted in the activity of individuals in the midst of human communities. Though perhaps more unstable and more fragile, these communities were also more warmhearted. The inhabitants of western Europe forgot they were the children of the Celts, and when they realized that they had been swindled by Latin orators who were masters of the art of deception by virtue of impeccably devised sophisms, they rushed headlong toward Christianity, thinking to find in it the elements that would feed their inner fire, a fire that, in truth, had never been extinguished. Alas, this had no better outcome than their initial turn to Rome. Not only did no one remember where the Alesia of Vercingetorix was located, but the remote paths of the authentic spiritual tradition that the Celts had nourished and exalted could no longer even be recognized. ...
