Introduction. L’Ange et la sphinge by Édouard Schuré, here translated as The Angel and the Sphinx, was first published in 1897 by Perrin et Cie, on behalf of the Librairie Académique Didier. It was the author’s first novel. The story included with it in this volume as a makeweight, “L’Élève du Tintoret,” here translated as “Tintoretto’s Pupil,” which might have been Schuré’s first published work of prose fiction, appeared in the 1 September 1882 issue of La Nouvelle Revue. Édouard Schuré (1841-1929) was a prolific writer of non-fiction, mostly about music and literature, and he was a regular contributor to the Revue des Deux Mondes from the 1870s onwards, but his fiction is relatively sparse, although he wrote poetry and dramatic works in the early part of his career. The novel translated herein was followed rapidly by his second, Le Double, serialized in La Nouvelle Revue in 1898 and reprinted as a book a year later. Schuré is best known today as the author of Les Grand Initiés (1889; tr. as The Great Initiates), a series of studies of the key figures in the so-called Hermetic Tradition of great magicians and mystics, which became one of the bestselling works of the French Occult Revival and a standard work of scholarly fantasy. ...
