Title : The Hávamál with selections from other poems of the Edda, illustrating the wisdom of the North in heathen times

The Hávamál is of unique interest as being the only work in Norse, or any other Teutonic Language, which embodies the philosophy of heathen times. Up to now it has not been easily accessible to English readers. It has been published only in editions of the Edda poems or still larger collections, and with the exception of one edition which contains a line by line translation but very few notes, these have all been out of print for many years. In addition to the poem itself the present edition contains extracts from three other poems (including the greater part of the Sigrdrifumál), which serve to illustrate the maxims or the magic of the Hávamál. The editor's thanks are due to the Syndics of the University Press for undertaking the publication of the book, and to the staff for the efficient manner in which the corrections have been carried out; to N ewnham College for the award of the Marion Kennedy Studentship and to the Trustees of the Earl of Moray Fund for generous grants, which together have enabled her to bring it to completion; and to Professor and Mrs Chadwick for assistance in the preparation and revision of the work. 7 November 1922. ...
