Preface. My purpose in this work, undertaken at the request of my esteemed friend Dr. J. H. Vincent, has been to write a history of Greece based as far as possible on the testimony of authorities contemporary with the events narrated. While I cheerfully acknowledge my obligations to Gibbon and Grote-the most eminent of modern historians - a careful study of the Greek writers has led me to differ from them on many important matters. ...
